I will be leaving later today for England! I will update as soon as I can upon arriving in England but it maybe a couple days since I will not be in Newcastle-upon-Tyne until Friday afternoon and I don't know if I will have Internet access right away (see wikipedia article for more information about Newcastle http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newcastle_upon_Tyne).
For those who don't know, I am volunteering with the Associate Missionaries of the Assumption volunteer program. There will be two other volunteers with me from the US (Abby and Melissa). We will all work at an after school program called Kids Kabin that was started by the Assumption sisters who live in Newcastle as an "alternative to boredom which can lead to youth disorder". We can each choose where we want to work in the mornings. The place I am most interested in is called Common Ground and it is an organization that helps asylum seekers. They run a food pantry, thrift store, help the asylum seekers fill our forms, improve their English and provide other helpful services. There are also chances to work at and elementary school, a senior center or work with our supervisors to find other placements based on our interests. We will tour the sites when we get there and make decisions on where we would like to spend our time.
